Es un placer darles la bienvenida a un nuevo capítulo de la Sociedad Ornitológica Puertorriqueña, Inc. (SOPI). Hemos rediseñado y actualizado nuestra página web para celebrar y resaltar la historia y logros de la organización hasta el día de hoy. Esto no sería posible sin el apoyo continuo de nuestro equipo de trabajo, membresía y voluntariado.
Les exhorto exploren las diferentes secciones de nuestro portal. Aquí encontraran información sobre los proyectos, actividades e iniciativas en las que trabajamos para avanzar la nuestra misión y visión para el futuro. Nos conmueve la experiencia y compromiso que SOPI ha recibido durante los últimos 24 años. Nuestros miembros han trabajado para promover la educación, conservación y manejo responsable de la avifauna en Puerto Rico. Esta página reconoce, celebra y agradece estos esfuerzos, que ahora pueden ser apreciados y compartidos en un espacio virtual de alta calidad.
Con el nuevo rediseño, nuestro portal se encuentra disponible en tres formatos claves: español, inglés y adaptación móvil. Estamos constantemente desarrollando proyectos de investigación e iniciativas nuevas que nos ayudarán a crecer como organización. Queremos aumentar los servicios que proveemos y reforzar nuestro compromiso con nuestras comunidades en Puerto Rico, el Caribe y Estados Unidos; esto refleja el crecimiento al que aspiramos en un futuro cercano.
Aprovecho esta oportunidad para presentarme formalmente a la membresía, ya que he estado trabajando con la organización desde el pasado mes de agosto 2018 como Directora Ejecutiva. En mi carrera como científica y ornitóloga he tenido el privilegio de estudiar las aves de Puerto Rico, participando y liderando proyectos de monitoreo, marcado y recaptura, y caracterización de hábitats con el fin de diseñar estrategias de manejo y conservación para nuestros recursos naturales.
Mis intereses como investigadora se enfocan en la ecología y conservación de aves en hábitats fragmentados. Las presiones de urbanización, deforestación, degradación de hábitats, contaminación, y el cambio climático son algunos de los retos que enfrentamos hoy en día, y los que nos deben motivar para continuar y redoblar nuestros esfuerzos. La restauración de hábitats, creación de corredores ecológicos, el manejo estratégico y protección de áreas importantes para aves y vida silvestre en Puerto Rico es lo que me ha guíado y motivado como profesional. La conservación es vital para la supervivencia de los humanos y la vida silvestre, ya que ni uno ni el otro existe en un vacío.
Creo que SOPI tiene un gran potencial para afectar cambios en política pública ambiental a nivel local, y contribuir a la resiliencia de Puerto Rico y sus comunidades de manera significativa. Esto es lo que motiva y guía mi trabajo con la organización. Los retos que enfrentamos hoy en día son muchos, pero si he aprendido algo en mi tiempo trabajando con la organización, es que nuestros trabajos, actividades e iniciativas, por más pequeñas que sean, tienen un efecto cumulativo. SOPI ha establecido una fundación sobre la cual podemos trabajar para crear algo realmente especial. Tenemos muchos planes y ambiciones para el futuro, queremos trabajar con ustedes, proveer más servicios, actividades, iniciativas y compromisos comunitarios.

It is an honor to welcome you to a new chapter in the history of the Puerto Rico Ornithological Society, Inc. (SOPI). We've redesigned and updated our website to celebrate and highlight the history and achievements of our organization to this date. None of this would be possible without the continuous support of our team, membership and volunteers.
Our new website has many features to explore. Here, you will find information about our current projects, activities and initiatives, designed to further SOPI's mission and vision for the future. Over the past 24 years, SOPI has received an incredible amount of support and compromise from our membership and working groups. Our volunteers have worked tirelessly to promote environmental education, conservation actions and the responsible management of Puerto Rico's avifauna. Throughout this website we recognize, celebrate and appreciate all these efforts, which are now available in a virtual space, and in high quality.
With this redesign, our website is now available in three key formats: Spanish, English and optimized for mobile. We are constantly designing research projects and initiatives that will help us grow as an organization. We want to increase the amount of services our organization provides, while strengthening our commitment to communities and conservation in Puerto Rico, the Caribbean and the US.
I'll use this opportunity to formally introduce myself to our membership. I've been working with SOPI since August 2018 as its Executive Director. In my career as a scientist and ornithologist, I've had the privilege of studying Puerto Rico's birds through a variety of projects, including monitoring, mark and recapture activities and habitat characterization with the goal of designing better management and conservation strategies for our natural resources.
My interests as a researcher have been focused on avian ecology and conservation in fragmented habitats. The pressures or urbanization, deforestation, habitat degradation, pollution and climate change are only some of the challenges we face - these should motivate our actions and efforts as an organization. Habitat restoration, wildlife corridors, strategic habitat management, and the protection of important bird areas in Puerto Rico is what motivates me as a professional. Conservation is the key for the survival of both humans and wildlife alike - neither exists in a vacuum.
SOPI has great potential for affecting significant changes in public policy at a local level, and has much to contribute to the restoration and resilience of Puerto Rico and its communities. This is the guiding principle and motivation for my work with the organization.
The challenges we face today are many, but if I've learned something in my time working with SOPI, its that our work, no matter the scope and reach, has a cumulative effect. We've established a strong foundation on which we can build and achieve something truly special. We have many plans and ambitions for the future - we want to work to provide more services, activities, and initiatives for our communities.
