Si encuentra un ave jóven que se ha caído de su nido, lo mejor que puede hacer para ayudarla es regresara al nido, si es posible, o moverla a un lugar en el suelo, cercano del nido donde se pueda esconder (ej. grama alta) de posibles predadores. No debe tratar de darle agua o comida a un ave silvestre.

Si desea que alguien vaya a recoger el ave, debe comunicarse directamente con el Cuerpo de Vigilantes del Departamento de Recursos Naturales y Ambientales de Puerto Rico, a través del 787-999-2200.

If a young bird or fledgling has fallen off its' nest, the best thing you can do to help the bird is carefully return it to its nest, if possible. If not, you should place the bird on the ground somewhere near its' nest where it can hide from potential predators (ex. tall grass). You should not try to give a wild bird water or food.

If a bird crashes into a window and is found alive, but in a state of shock, you can pick up the bird with a light cloth or wash towel, and place it in a dark, quiet shoebox for two to three hours, to allow it to recuperate. If the bird is responsive after this, it should be returned to where it was found.

Puerto Rican Lizard-Cuckoo

(Coccyzus vieilloti)

IDENTIFICACIÓN: Un ave forestal grande de pecho gris y vientre rufo. Tiene un anillo rojo alrededor del ojo, una larga cola con prominentes manchas blancas por abajo y un pico largo y relativamente recto. HÁBITOS: El Pájaro Bobo Mayor se mueve lentamente por la maleza, forrajeando en el estrato intermedio y el dosel de los bosques en busca de presas. Se alimenta principalmente de los abundantes lagartijos, presas que componen quizás tres cuartas partes de la dieta. HÁBITAT: Malezas y bosques en toda la Isla.

ID: A large forest bird with a gray chest and a rufous belly. It has a red ring around the eye, a long tail with prominent white spots on the bottom and a long, relatively straight bill.

HABITS: The Big Bobo Bird moves slowly through the brush, foraging in the intermediate stratum and the forest canopy in search of prey. It feeds mainly on the abundant lizards, dams that make up perhaps three quarters of the diet.

HABITAT: Weeds and forests throughout the Island.

Puerto Rican Nightjar

(Antrostomus noctitherus)

IDENTIFICACIÓN Plumaje marrón moteado; El macho tiene las puntas externas de la cola blancas, visible sólo mientras vuela. HÁBITOS Ave nocturna, se posa en las ramas durante la noche, desde donde vuela para capturar insectos. Necesita de bosques con dosel cerrado y hojarasca para anidar. Anida mayormente de abril a junio. No construye nido sino que pone 1 o 2 huevos en el suelo sobre la hojarasca. HÁBITAT Bosques secos en el suroeste de Puerto Rico.

ID: Mottled brown plumage; The male has the outer tips of the tail white, visible only while flying.

HABITS: Nightbird, perches on the branches at night, from where it flies to catch insects. It needs forests with closed canopy and litter to nest. It nests mostly from April to June. It does not build a nest, but it puts 1 or 2 eggs on the ground on the litter.

HABITAT: Dry forests in the southwest of Puerto Rico.

Green Mango

IDENTIFICACIÓN: Colibrí grande de pico curvo. Ambos sexos son verde por arriba y por abajo, con la cola azulosa. La intensidad del color depende del ángulo de la luz. HÁBITOS: Se alimenta principalmente de insectos (por ejemplo, escarabajos y moscas), arañas y néctar. A veces caza insectos al vuelo pero más típicamente los agarra de la superficie de las hojas y la corteza. Aunque es la hembra quien se encarga de toda la incubación y el cuido de los pichones, el macho suele montar guardia en un árbol cercano mientras la hembra yace en el nido. HÁBITAT: Bosques, cafetales y el borde de los bosques en montañas y colinas.

ID: Large hummingbird with curved bill. Both sexes are green above and below, with bluish tail. The intensity of the color depends on the angle of the light.

HABITS: It feeds mainly on insects (eg, beetles and flies), spiders and nectar. Sometimes it hunts insects on the fly but more typically grabs them from the surface of the leaves and bark. Although it is the female who is responsible for all the incubation and care of the chicks, the male usually stands guard in a nearby tree while the female lies in the nest.

HABITAT: Forests, coffee plantations and the edge of forests in mountains and hills.

Puerto Rican Emerald

(Chlorostilbon maugaeus)

IDENTIFICACIÓN: El cuerpo del macho es verde iridiscente, con la cola negra y ahorquillada. La mandíbula inferior es color carne o roja con la punta negra. La hembra es blancuzca por abajo, con las puntas de la cola color blanco. HÁBITOS: El Zumbadorcito de Puerto Rico se alimenta de insectos, arañas y néctar. El macho suele forrajear más alto en la copa de los árboles que la hembra y también prefiere el néctar. Los colibríes son muy territoriales e intensamente defienden con persecuciones aéreas sus rincones favoritos del bosque. Algunos Zumbadorcitos le "roban" el néctar a las flores perforando un hueco en la base de las mismas. HÁBITAT: Bosques, manglares y jardines en toda la Isla.

ID: The body of the male is iridescent green, with black tail and forked. The lower jaw is flesh or red with the black tip. The female is whitish below, with the tips of the tail white.

HABITS: The Buzzadorcito of Puerto Rico feeds on insects, spiders and nectar. The male usually forages higher in the tree canopy than the female and also prefers nectar. The hummingbirds are very territorial and intensely defend with aerial persecutions their favorite corners of the forest. Some buzzards "steal" the nectar from the flowers by piercing a hole at the base of the flowers.

HABITAT: Forests, mangroves and gardens throughout the Island.

Puerto Rican Screech-Owl

(Megascops nudipes)

IDENTIFICACIÓN: Búho pequeño con "cejas" blancas, pardo oscuro por arriba y blanco por abajo, con estrías oscuras en el pecho. HÁBITOS: Aunque vocaliza con frecuencia a lo largo del año, el Múcaro puede ser difícil de ver ya que es estrictamente nocturno y tiene la costumbre de cantar escondido en la espesura del follaje. El nido es una cavidad en un árbol donde pone 1 ó 2 huevos. HÁBITAT: Bosques, arboledas, jardines con árboles y el borde de los bosques. Prefiere bosques con un sotobosque bien desarrollado que tengan palmas o árboles grandes con cavidades.

HABITS: Although it vocalizes frequently throughout the year, the Múcaro can be difficult to see since it is strictly nocturnal and has the habit of singing hidden in the foliage thickness. The nest is a cavity in a tree where it lays 1 or 2 eggs.

HABITAT: Forests, groves, gardens with trees and the edge of forests. It prefers forests with a well-developed understory that has palms or large trees with cavities.

Puerto Rican Tody(Todus mexicanus)

IDENTIFICACIÓN: Un diminuto pájaro forestal de llamativo plumaje. La cola es corta, las partes superiores son verde esmeralda y la garganta es rojo brillante, al igual que la mandíbula inferior. Los flancos están teñidos de amarillo. Los ojos son grises en los machos, blancos en las hembras. HÁBITOS: Se posa callado con el pico inclinado hacia arriba, escudriñando el sotobosque en busca de insectos. Puede quedar tan inmóvil que es difícil detectarlo, aun con sus brillantes colores. De repente vuela hacia arriba, agarra un insecto en la parte inferior de una hoja o rama, y se posa en otra percha. Raras veces caza insectos en vuelo. HÁBITAT: Todo tipo de bosque con abundante maleza, siempre y cuando existan taludes terrosos donde anidar. _____

ID: A tiny forest bird of striking plumage. The tail is short, the upper parts are emerald green and the throat is bright red, as is the lower jaw. The flanks are dyed yellow. The eyes are gray in the males, white in the females.

HABITS: It sits quietly with its beak tilted upwards, scanning the underbrush for insects. It can be so immobile that it is difficult to detect it, even with its bright colors. Suddenly it flies up, grabs an insect on the bottom of a leaf or branch, and perches on another perch. Rarely hunting insects in flight.

HABITAT: All kinds of forests with abundant weeds, as long as there are earthy slopes where to nest.

Puerto Rican Woodpecker

(Melanerpes portoricensis)

IDENTIFICACIÓN: Partes dorsales del todo negras, con la frente blanca y la garganta y el pecho de un rojo brillante. El vientre inferior y los flancos son color ante. La rabadilla blanca destaca al volar. La hembra tiene menos rojo ventralmente que el macho. HÁBITOS: Prospecta la corteza, sondea grietas y taladra huecos en troncos y ramas en busca de sus presas favoritas: larvas de escarabajos, hormigas, tijeretas y otros insectos. Al volar, los carpinteros pausan entre vigorosos aleteos, produciendo un vuelo ondulatorio. HÁBITAT: Bosques, cafetales de sombra, manglares, palmares, parques y jardines: dondequiera que haya árboles.

ID: Dorsal parts entirely black, with white forehead and throat and chest a bright red. The lower belly and the flanks are ante-colored. The white rump stands out when flying. The female has less red ventrally than the male.

HABITS: Prospect the bark, probes cracks and drills holes in trunks and branches in search of their favorite prey: larvae of beetles, ants, earwigs and other insects. When flying, the carpenters pause between vigorous flutters, producing a wave flight.

HABITAT: Forests, shade coffee plantations, mangroves, palm groves, parks and gardens: wherever there are trees.

Puerto Rican Parrot

(Amazona vittata)

IDENTIFICACIÓN: Verde con la frente roja; Anillo blanco alrededor de los ojos; Pico crema, ancho y curvo; Azul brillante en las plumas más largas de las alas. HÁBITOS: Se desplaza en parejas o bandadas pequeñas. Se alimenta de semillas, frutas, corteza y flores de árboles como la palma de sierra y el tabonuco. Anida en los huecos de los troncos, usualmente de palo colorado. Forma parejas de por vida. HÁBITAT: Restringida al bosque de El Yunque, Río Abajo y en cautiverio.

HABITAT: Restricted to the forest of El Yunque, Río Abajo and in captivity.

Puerto Rican Flycatcher

(Myiarchus antillarum)

IDENTIFICACIÓN: Tiránido de partes dorsales pardo oscuro y partes ventrales claras. A veces hay una sugerencia de dos barras color ante en las alas. HÁBITOS: El Juí se posa en las ramas del estrato bajo o intermedio de los bosques esperando a que pase algún insecto para volar tras él. A diferencia de muchas aves terrestres, pero al igual que la hembra, el macho desarrolla un área en el vientre carente de plumas donde el calor corporal puede ser transferido a los huevos. HÁBITAT: Bosques a baja elevación, especialmente matorrales costeros.

ID: Tyranid of dark brown dorsal parts and clear ventral parts. Sometimes there is a suggestion of two ante-colored bars on the wings.

HABITS: The Juí perches on the branches of the low or intermediate stratum of the forests, waiting for some insect to pass to fly after it. Unlike many terrestrial birds, but like the female, the male develops an area in the belly lacking feathers where body heat can be transferred to the eggs.

HABITAT: Forests at low elevation, especially coastal thickets.

Puerto Rican Vireo

IDENTIFICACIÓN: Pequeño pájaro forestal de pico grueso, cabeza gris, pecho blanco y vientre amarillo pálido. Un anillo blanco incompleto rodea los ojos. HÁBITOS: Se mueve lentamente por el follaje, investigando las hojas en busca de presas como saltamontes, cigarras, escarabajos, áfidos y orugas. También come arañas, lagartijos y pequeñas bayas. Prefiere el estrato intermedio y el inferior de los árboles pero, ya que forrajea despacio en la vegetación tupida y en las enredaderas, localizar la especie puede resultar un tanto difícil. HÁBITAT: Bosques montanos, cafetales de sombra, mogotes costeros y matorrales espinosos con abundante enmarañado.

HABITS: It moves slowly through the foliage, investigating the leaves in search of prey such as grasshoppers, cicadas, beetles, aphids and caterpillars. It also eats spiders, lizards and small berries. It prefers the intermediate and lower stratum of the trees but, since it forages slowly in the dense vegetation and in the vines, locating the species can be somewhat difficult.

HABITAT: Montane forests, shade coffee plantations, coastal mogotes and thorn scrub with abundant entanglement.

Puerto Rican Tanager

(Nesospingus speculiferus)

IDENTIFICACIÓN: Ruidosa ave forestal de partes dorsales color marrón oliváceo, más oscuro en la parte superior de la cabeza. Las partes ventrales son blancuzcas con estrías color gris claro. Los adultos tienen una pequeña mancha cuadrada color blanco en las alas. HÁBITOS: Se desplaza en parejas o grupos pequeños, forrajeando enérgicamente en arbustos y árboles en busca de insectos, caracoles y lagartijos. También come frutas, alimentándose de éstas posada en una rama vecina. HÁBITAT: Bosques montanos, cafetales de sombra, y jardines en las elevaciones más altas de la Isla.

ID: Noisy forest bird with olive-brown dorsal parts, darker on the top of the head. The ventral parts are whitish with light gray striae. Adults have a small square white spot on the wings.

HABITS: It moves in pairs or small groups, foraging vigorously in bushes and trees in search of insects, snails and lizards. He also eats fruits, feeding on these perched on a neighboring branch.

HABITAT: Montane forests, shade coffee plantations, and gardens in the highest elevations of the Island.

Puerto Rican Spindalis

IDENTIFICACIÓN: El macho es verde por arriba con el cuello y el pecho anaranjado. La cabeza es negra con rayas blancas arriba y debajo del ojo. Contrastando con el llamativo plumaje del macho, la hembra es color verde oliva con estrías no muy marcadas en la parte ventral y una vaga sugerencia del patrón de la cabeza del macho. HÁBITOS: Esta tangara se desplaza en parejas o bandadas pequeñas que frecuentan todos los niveles de bosques y plantaciones. Se alimenta principalmente de bayas y frutas como higos, zarzamoras y la fruta del yagrumo, pero también consume áfidos y otros insectos. HÁBITAT: Bosques, jardines en las urbanizaciones y plantaciones con plantas que estén fructificando, a todas las elevaciones y Culebra.

ID: The male is green above with the neck and chest orange. The head is black with white stripes above and below the eye. HÁBITOS: La Calandria se alimenta principalmente de insectos en el dosel y el estrato intermedio de los bosques pero también consume frutos y el jugo de chinas demasiado maduras. HÁBITAT: Bosques secos y húmedos, incluyendo cafetales de sombra; plantaciones de cítricos, manglares, palmares y jardines urbanos.

ID: The adult Calandria is black, with a patch on the wings, the rump and the lower part of the base of the yellow tail. The immature ones are olive green.

HABITS: The Calandria feeds mainly on insects in the canopy and the intermediate stratum of the forests but also consumes fruits and the juice of overripe Chinese.

HABITAT: Dry and humid forests, including shade coffee plantations; plantations of citrus fruits, mangroves, palm groves and urban gardens.

Yellow-shouldered Blackbird

IDENTIFICACIÓN: Plumaje negro; Mancha amarilla en el hombro (muñeca); Pico negro y afilado. HÁBITOS: Se alimenta de insectos, arañas y ocasionalmente, semillas o caracoles. A veces se asocia con el Mozambique y el Tordo Lustroso. Construye un nido en forma de copa donde pone de 1 a 4 huevos azul verdoso con manchas marrón. HÁBITAT: Suroeste de Puerto Rico, bosque costero de Ceiba, Isla de Mona. Antiguamente se encontraba en todos los llanos costeros.

IDENTIFICACIÓN: Reinita de espalda gris con la garganta y el pecho color amarillo. Tiene una línea amarilla y blanca sobre el ojo y una media luna blanca debajo de éste. HÁBITOS: La Reinita Mariposera se alimenta de insectos que agarra de la superficie del follaje en los estratos intermedios y superiores del bosque. Comúnmente se integra a las bandadas mixtas compuestas por San Pedritos, vireos y reinitas migratorias de América del Norte. HÁBITAT: Bosques secos y algunos bosques húmedos con maleza y enmarañado, especialmente en el suroeste y los mogotes del norte de la Isla.

HABITS: The Mariposera Warbler feeds on insects that grab the foliage surface in the middle and upper strata of the forest. Commonly it is integrated to the mixed flocks composed by San Pedritos, vireos and migratory warblers of North America.

HABITAT: Dry forests and some humid forests with weeds and entangled, especially in the southwest and the mogotes of the north of the Island.

Puerto Rican Bullfinch

IDENTIFICACIÓN: Un pájaro forestal de plumaje negro, con el pico grueso y manchas rojizas sobre los ojos, en la garganta y debajo de la base de la cola. La hembra es un poco más pequeña y de coloración más apagada que el macho. HÁBITOS: El Comeñame se alimenta de frutas y semillas y, con menos frecuencia, de brotes, flores y néctar. Forrajea en la vegetación tupida, desplazándose por todos los niveles del bosque pero especialmente en el estrato intermedio de los bosques húmedos y el dosel de los bosques secos y enanos. HÁBITAT: Bosques secos y húmedos con abundante maleza, matorrales tupidos y cafetales en toda la Isla, con excepción del extremo este.
