If a young bird or fledgling has fallen off its' nest, the best thing you can do to help the bird is carefully return it to its nest, if possible. If not, you should place the bird on the ground somewhere near its' nest where it can hide from potential predators (ex. tall grass). You should not try to give a wild bird water or food.
If you wish for the bird to be picked up by authorities, you should directly contact the Rangers at the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources through 787-999-2200.

If a bird crashes into a window and is found alive, but in a state of shock, you can pick up the bird with a light cloth or wash towel, and place it in a dark, quiet shoebox for two to three hours, to allow it to recuperate. If the bird is responsive after this, it should be returned to where it was found.
You can also contact the Rangers at the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources through 787-999-2200.
___
When birdwatching, it is extremely important to be mindful of your distance to birds, other wildlife and surrounding vegetation. Being too close to a bird may stress the bird, potentially impacting its reproductive success if it's nesting at the time. The probability of having a detrimental effect on the surrounding natural resources increases as we fail to consider our safety and surroundings while birding. For more information, please consult our ethical guidelines before going birding.

The Pelecaniformes are an order of medium-sized and large waterbirds found worldwide. As traditionally—but erroneously—defined, they encompass all birds that have feet with all four toes webbed. Hence, they were formerly also known by such names as totipalmates or steganopodes. Most have a bare throat patch (gular patch), and the nostrils have evolved into dysfunctional slits, forcing them to breathe through their mouths. They feed on fish, squid, or similar marine life. Nesting is colonial, but individual birds are monogamous.

In general, the Piciformes are insectivorous, although the barbets and toucans mostly eat fruit and the honeyguides are unique among birds in being able to digest beeswax(although insects make up the bulk of their diet). Nearly all Piciformes have parrot-like zygodactyl feet—two toes forward and two back, an arrangement that has obvious advantages for birds that spend much of their time on tree trunks.

Puerto Rican Lizard-Cuckoo
(Coccyzus vieilloti)
___
ID: A large forest bird with a gray chest and a rufous belly. It has a red ring around the eye, a long tail with prominent white spots on the bottom and a long, relatively straight bill.
HABITS: The Big Bobo Bird moves slowly through the brush, foraging in the intermediate stratum and the forest canopy in search of prey. It feeds mainly on the abundant lizards, dams that make up perhaps three quarters of the diet.
HABITAT: Weeds and forests throughout the Island.
Puerto Rican Nightjar
(Antrostomus noctitherus)
___
ID: Mottled brown plumage; The male has the outer tips of the tail white, visible only while flying.
HABITS: Nightbird, perches on the branches at night, from where it flies to catch insects. It needs forests with closed canopy and litter to nest. It nests mostly from April to June. It does not build a nest, but it puts 1 or 2 eggs on the ground on the litter.
HABITAT: Dry forests in the southwest of Puerto Rico.
Green Mango
(Anthracothorax viridis)
___
ID: Large hummingbird with curved bill. Both sexes are green above and below, with bluish tail. The intensity of the color depends on the angle of the light.
HABITS: It feeds mainly on insects (eg, beetles and flies), spiders and nectar. Sometimes it hunts insects on the fly but more typically grabs them from the surface of the leaves and bark. Although it is the female who is responsible for all the incubation and care of the chicks, the male usually stands guard in a nearby tree while the female lies in the nest.
HABITAT: Forests, coffee plantations and the edge of forests in mountains and hills.
Puerto Rican Emerald
(Chlorostilbon maugaeus)
