"[...] Birding gives me the opportunity to continue learning and discovering the natural world that surrounds us, in an interactive way. This learning process translates into conservation actions as we protect what we know.

My mission with SOPI is to strengthen its organizational structure that works towards conservaton, promoting an inclusive environment where our differences motivate us, and a passion for the environment guides us."

"With SOPI I learned that in order to birdwatch, we need to conserve our ecosystems. With this message, and the evolution of the organization, I've been able to lead conservtion efforts focused on building partnerships with different organizations. One of the most dramatic steps that SOPI has taken  has been its participation in legal processes to guarantee the protection of one of Puerto Rico's IBAS (Important Bird Areas)".

Conserving our ecosystems and everything that lives within them prolongs our existence on this planet. Recognizing this, and working towards this goal should be considered an act of self-preservation.[...] To this end, the most important aspects are the education and empowerment of citizens and establishing key alliances."

"To me, habitat conservation and restoration are essential actions that are intricately linked to human health and well being. We live in a time where these factors have converged with the challenges Puerto Rico is facing. The time to raise awareness, strengthen our communities and take action is now".

"My interest for birds began at a shorebird workshop presented by SOPI, in Jobos Bay.

SOPI's biggest influence in my life has been the ability to see the world of birds in a different way - it has helped me connect with wildlife and nature, and also allowed me to meet all manner of people, with one common denominator - their unique human quality"

"I love birding because it gives me energy, it gives me an interesting opportunity to contemplate life.

The best advice I can give to people interested in birding is to participate in one of SOPI's bird ID workshops."

"I had always had an interest in nature since I was young, but no one to help me develop this interest. A great friend and former SOPI president introduced me to the wonderful world of observation. With a bird guide they gave me and a bicycle, I began to find lots of birds in my surroundings. You don't need much to begin observing birds and birding, just your interest and enthusiasm. Find a bird guide, go out to a forest or park, or even your own backyard. Watch and listen - it will surprise you how much you will find in your surroundings."

"In my opinion, one of the most important aspects for conserving our environment is the preservation of biodiversity. To achieve this, it is essential to make changes in our behaviors and habits that allow us to fight pollution and the exploitation of our natural resources".
